National Centre for Technology in Education (NCTE)

The NCTE was founded in 1998 by the Department of Education and Science. As the centre is the main Government agency designed around the use of information and communications technology in education in Ireland it plays a pivotal role in helping to maximise the benefits for learners and teachers who use ICT. The centre is located in the grounds of Dublin City University.

The NCTE is responsible for the following:

  • It provides up to date ICT support to schools to improve learning and teaching;
  • It co-ordinates the primary and secondary Schools Broadband Programme;
  • It develops and maintains Scoilnet, which is an important educational website portal for teachers;
  • It provides a range of digital content resources;
  • It develops resources and provides ICT support in relation to special needs education;
  • It provides advice to the Department of Education and Science (DES) and other educational agencies on issues such as the use of ICT in Irish schools;
  • It also maintains Irish participation in EU and international ICT and educational projects.
