Enquiry Based Learning Instruction in Junior Certificate Science

The introduction of the new Junior Certificate Science syllabus in 2003 saw an increased emphasis on scientific investigation skills in student activities. However, since the introduction of the new practical elements, significant problems have been highlighted by the science teachers including the increased workload involved for teachers and the poor ability of the students to carry out the investigations. Sample enquiry based lessons and techniques required for enquiry based lessons will be demonstrated and discussed with the aim of promoting Junior Certificate science students investigative skills. The seminar will be presented by Ms. Joanne Broggy.

Biography

Joanne Broggy is the Project Officer in Teaching and Learning in Science in the National Centre for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching and Learning (NCE-MSTL), where she works closely with the biological and physical sciences. She graduated in 2005 with a B.Sc. Ed. degree in Biological Science and Physics. Joanne is in the final stage of her PhD in the area of physics education, where the focus is on the use of Concept Mapping in the science classroom with particular emphasis on the students ability in problem solving and use of scientific language.
